So I have been in love with Active Child since magically stumbling upon his She Was A Vision 7” released through Transparent Records over a year ago. Then the Merok release of his Curtis Lane EP blew me away. But his new full length album You Are All I See has quickly become my favorite album of the year. Soaring electronics, trickling harps, emotional croons - all the elements of Active Child’s style are here but they have grown and matured to this genre bending explosion of power, disparity, love, and bliss. This should make its way on to all Top 10 lists for 2011. Jaw-dropping. Much love to Hypem for the album stream.

Disclosure - Just Your Type

this brotherly duo, 19 and 16 years old, stole my heart with their first 7” on Moshi Moshi - especially the b-sdie Street Light Chronicle. Now, hot on the heels of their Carnival b/w I Love…That You Know 7” on Transparent, the two have put out this total heat track. DJs everywhere should be spinning this for a while.

Haunted Ghost’s Chanson Du Jour: elusive everything edition

E A S Y :: Venice Beach

I love this song. Everything about it just hits me in such a heavy way. But E A S Y is an absolute enigma. Considering the equally anonymous and mysterious Vondelpark collaborated with them on this, I might venture to guess that they’re from the UK, but really, I have no idea. Being the masters of the hidden face - no myspace, no facebook, no google friendly name - it is difficult to really pin these folks down.

But why the anonymity? Because now it’s solely about the music. No silly image, no faces to the sound, just this tight, four minute piece with a building climax like no other. When the tweaked guitars roar in at the end, lifting each note of the song higher and higher, it takes you along. By the end, you’re soaring, hovering about the ground on a song so fine-tuned and simple, yet so deeply involved, you’re left in that weird limbo of wanting more but having enough, of being satisfied and insatiable. Given the lack of info, there’s a general uncertainty as to the future of the project. Will it continue to exist, or was this four minute moment it? There’s no telling, so sit back, enjoy the song on repeat (as I do) and know you’re basically listening to a beautiful ghost.

Leftist Nautical Antiques- A Distro Label Mini-Review

As well as being a tape label (putting out the now out of print Pure Ecstasy - Future Nostalgia CS and Forest Swords - Miaches CS), Leftist Nautical Antiques is one hell of a distro, small though it may be, graciously supplying America with some gems from Not Not Fun (like the hella fun Vibes - Psychic EP 7”) and Transparent Records (which, without LNA, would only be purchasable from the UK), as well as some 7” releases from the likes of Captured Tracks (label of Blank Dogs, Wild Nothing, and Beach Fossils) and Woodsist (Woods’ label). Of the many times I’ve purchased something from LNA, it always comes with a little handwritten note from Alex - the guy who runs the thing- which is a really welcome personal touch. Everything is priced reasonably (granted the imports are a bit more, but I mean, shipping from the UK is gonna run ya one anyway) and arrives promptly and in good condition. There was a while there where nothing was happening on LNA, but yesterday Alex reported having spontaneously gone on a soul-searching journey of sorts and that LNA will live again.

In the words of Alex - the world turns, the kush burns. Please don’t hate me.
