Serena-Maneesh :: Drain Cosmetics
Today in the Scandanavia series, the focus is directed at Norway! And what better way to kick it off than with one of my all time favorite psychedelic shoe-gaze bands Serena-Maneesh. The musical brain child of Emil Nikolaisen, the Oslo based collective is one of the most droned out yet in your face all out noise spectacular groups around today. Their sound is a culmination of various psych and shoe gaze acts from the 80s and 90s, drawing influences from groups like the Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, Neu!, and Spacemen 3. On stage, the band becomes a power house force ending in a completely entropic display of art noise punk. I had the privelege of seeing them live as they toured the release of their first, self-titled album in 2005, watching at the end as Emil caught the bass drum on his guitar and, while bending over backwards, used it like a slide. Powerfully energetic, completely immersive, the band has released two records and a number of singles, moving from Beggars Group to 4AD records with their second release - Serena Maneesh 2: Abyss in B Minor.
