Haunted Ghost’s Chanson du Jour :: drfit-step edition
Sorrow - Lubilu (Stumbleine Remix) by Sorrow. Birmingham, UK’s new minimalist dubstep prodigy Sorrow. takes many lessons from the pops and hits of the likes of Burial and Mount Kimbie while at the same time appreciating more the sparse, ambient textures reminiscent of a softer Jon Hopkins or Library Tapes, dropping in patient, constant beats and slowed down vocal samples here or there for a hypnosis inducing state. This remix by fellow UK musicians Stumbleine plays on that sense of space and ambience perfectly, creating a drifting, beautifully ethereal piece that feels like floating like stray paper on a breeze. Really engaging and introspective.
Here is the original, which is also amazing, less effervescent but all the while euphoric: Sorrow - Lubilu by Sorrow.

Kelis :: Brave (Dark Sky Remix)
This song is so hot that I have to listen to it with the fan on. The London based trio Dark Sky have taken Kelis’ original song and turned it into a sweaty, dance hit. Since their debut on Pictures Music, Dark Sky has been turning out track after track of truly unique, dusky, and beautiful electronic music. Why is it that all the best dubstep comes from the UK? I need to go drink the water there, something must be in it.
New Look - The Ballad (Koreless Remix)
Also check out this tune by New Look.
Such a sparse and beautiful remix. Koreless can do no wrong. The young Glasgowegian minimalist dub-step artist is pure, top notch class. Check out the 12” he put out for tracks 4D / MTI (MTI is an all out dancefloor sweeper). Good luck finding it on vinyl though. The original sold out from primary sources in a day.
I DID A REMIX FOR VANCOUVER’S BABE RAINBOW. CHECK IT OUT. SPREAD THE LOVE.

Nosaj Thing :: Us (Jon Hopkins Remix)
Los Angeles based beat-blender modulation master Nosaj Thing released his debut album Drift on Alpha Pup Records back in June of 2009 to much acclaim. This year it got the royal treatment of remixes from various electronic buffs such as Jamie XX, Daedelus, Take, and Dntel. However, of all the remixes on the album it is British composer Jon Hopkins who truly makes some next level changes. A two part electronic/neo-classical opus, the brilliant UK lad takes the relatively calm original track and turns it into an incredibly grimy trip-hop banger that devolves in a haze of noise into a beautiful, gentle piano piece, showcasing Jon Hopkins as the great neo-classical composer that he is. A truly visceral and stripping song and easily one of the best remixes to come out of 2010.

On-The-Go :: In the Wind (Stoned Boys Digital Spell Mix)
Where is it colder than New York right now? Russia. Where are some awesome musicians coming from at the moment? Russia! Moscow based duo On-The-Go have been making music since 2007 when they released their debut EP - Two Weeks Is Not Enough - and have been making headway in the scene there since. Their newest release, the single In the Wind, was put out on Xuman Records this year and feels like the younger cousin to Foals’ first single Spanish Sahara from their dark pop opus Total Life Forever. The comparison is warranted and if anything should be taken as a compliment.
Moscow based Stoned Boys have their own brand of moody, melancholic electronic music which they incorporate seamlessly with On-The-Go’s gloom pop. The beat they incorporate is a dance floor smasher and will likely turn more than a couple heads in the blogosphere.
Also, here’s the video for the original version of In the Wind. It’s just top notch stuff, here. Also, you can download their EP and self titled release from their myspace for free!!
Keep Shelly In Athens remixed Steve Mason’s Boys Outside, which is also the perfect moment to share Active Child’s splendid remix of Lost and Found. Both turn his tracks into something of their own, something rather unique. Apparently Steve Mason is working on a dub version of his album titled Ghosts Outside right now.

Most of the time, disconaivete just knows what to say. Which is why you should follow them. And also listen to these two amazing songs.

Alpine :: Heartlove (FISHING Backyard Bonding remix)
Maybe it’s the weather, or maybe it’s the abundance of poisonous animals (even the platypus!). Perhaps its the merry bounce of the kangaroo or the ancient tones of the didgeridoo, but something in Australia is inspiring some amazing music right now. Melbourne based Alpine has been making some serious, dark pop with super catchy guitar riffs and layer after layer of beautiful vocals sung from not one but two amazing ladies. Their latest single Heartlove has been making its round around the internet blog community slowly but surely, and as well it should. It’s driving power-guitar and vocal interplay make it a stand-up knockout. Though it is fellow Aussie FISHING who takes the track to the next level, transforming the dark, melo-pop tune into an airy, bouncy, glitch pop song, and it is awesome. The way he takes the main vocal line of “I never wanted you to go,” dabs a little auto-tune and chops it up a tad, it turns into a staccato, almost Ace of Base meets Akufen style ditty. Keep your eyes and ears on these two groups. It’s spring time in Australia.

The UK has always been a place where electronic music thrives and evolves, usually exporting to the US most of the styles of their time (like how dub-step is all the rage here now while the UK is doing that “so five years ago” yawn). One fresh group that has stood out to me for a while now is called D/R/U/G/S and they create some weird hybrid of dubstep, ambient, and just straight-up, poppin’ off, dance floor hits.
Here is Love (Love Lust) -their “big single” so to speak- a building ethereal club jam for the ages:
And here are a couple awesome remixes they did recently that I have not been able to put down. One is for the track Follow by Spanish band Crystal Fighters who’ve been making some serious waves in the scene lately. The other is for London based rising ambient all-stars Cymbals for their song Good Luck. Check it out!:

CFCF :: It Was Never Meant to Be This Way (Games Remix)
I’ve been obsessed with Montreal producer CFCF (real name Mike Silver) after I first heard his debut full length Panesian Nights in 2008. His dance floor post 80s Miami Vice style synth just knocked my socks off. On his more expanded second release - Continent - in 2009, he began filling out his sound, leaving some of his more Italo disco nuances for bigger hooks, more production, and heavier vocals. Now, on Brooklyn’s own RVNG Intl. he is releasing a new 12” called The River which comes with some remixes in the digital format. From what I’ve heard, The River is a darker, moodier monster, with the same kind of 80s synth but also with way more minor chords and eerie, reverb laden tribal drums.
On the digital release, we get a remix by Brooklyn band Games (the collaboration between Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin and Tigercity’s Joel Ford) that is an absolute powerhouse, combining the midi echoing eeriness that Games has so effortlessly patented as well as that stark Knight Rider theme song voice of CFCF. And those two things combined, what do you get?
Pure. Gold.
