Haunted Ghost’s Chanson du Jour :: drfit-step edition
Sorrow - Lubilu (Stumbleine Remix) by Sorrow. Birmingham, UK’s new minimalist dubstep prodigy Sorrow. takes many lessons from the pops and hits of the likes of Burial and Mount Kimbie while at the same time appreciating more the sparse, ambient textures reminiscent of a softer Jon Hopkins or Library Tapes, dropping in patient, constant beats and slowed down vocal samples here or there for a hypnosis inducing state. This remix by fellow UK musicians Stumbleine plays on that sense of space and ambience perfectly, creating a drifting, beautifully ethereal piece that feels like floating like stray paper on a breeze. Really engaging and introspective.
Here is the original, which is also amazing, less effervescent but all the while euphoric: Sorrow - Lubilu by Sorrow.
January has seen record low temperatures for New York, and with that it is important to have a soundtrack that both compliments and then obliterates said cold. Something to wake up to with the soft light of a cloud covered sky, the diffused gray tone casting a calm glow about the room. This January Mix is for the snow days and for surviving the biting cold.

Nosaj Thing :: Us (Jon Hopkins Remix)
Los Angeles based beat-blender modulation master Nosaj Thing released his debut album Drift on Alpha Pup Records back in June of 2009 to much acclaim. This year it got the royal treatment of remixes from various electronic buffs such as Jamie XX, Daedelus, Take, and Dntel. However, of all the remixes on the album it is British composer Jon Hopkins who truly makes some next level changes. A two part electronic/neo-classical opus, the brilliant UK lad takes the relatively calm original track and turns it into an incredibly grimy trip-hop banger that devolves in a haze of noise into a beautiful, gentle piano piece, showcasing Jon Hopkins as the great neo-classical composer that he is. A truly visceral and stripping song and easily one of the best remixes to come out of 2010.
